Who needs a press release when you’ve got Twitter? American Idol runner-up and Hair vet Diana DeGarmo has tweeted the following casting news:
“It’s official: I will be playing Miss Doralee Rhodes in the 1st Nat’l Tour of 9 to 5 The Musical :) plus, we open in NASHVILLE!!!”
Although no official announcement has been made, DeGarmo is apparently hitting the road as one third of the trio of female office workers in the touring version of Dolly Parton’s 2009 Broadway musical. The show tour will launch on September 21 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville, where DeGarmo now has a home. Jeff Calhoun will direct and choreograph, rather than the Broadway team of Joe Mantello and Andy Blankenbuehler. The show features a book by Patricia Resnick.
DeGarmo played Sheila in the final cast of Hair and starred in the off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger. Since placing second to Fantasia Barrino on the third season of American Idol, she has appeared on Broadway in Hairspray and in the first national tours of Brooklyn: The Musical and OZ, The Musical.
The Broadway production of 9 to 5 opened on April 30, 2009, at the Marquis Theatre and played 148 performances. Megan Hilty played Doralee alongside Allison Janney as Violet Newstead, Stephanie J. Block as Judy Bernly and Marc Kudisch as Franklin Hart Jr.
