It’s a book, it’s a play, it’s….Gatz! The epic theatrical event now previewing at the Public Theater doesn’t fit so easily into one category. In the six-plus hour show, a cast of thirteen actors recreates the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby in its entirety. It is not an adaptation of the tale, but an enactment of the novel itself, delivered word for word. One morning in a dingy office, a low-rent employee finds a copy of The Great Gatsby in the clutter of his desk. He starts to read it out loud, and doesn’t stop.
