You know you’re in good hands when heavy-hitters like playwright John Guare, director George C. Wolfe and star Jeffrey Wright are offering up a new work. Their collaboration produced the amazing: A Free Man of Color, which opened at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre on November 18. The restoration comedy/vaudeville epic takes on everything from the Louisiana Purchase to slavery to yellow fever—yes, it’s a comedy!—to political history that still echoes today. The opening night found the cast of 30-plus performers in good spirits as they toasted to their ambitious new American play at Avery Fisher Hall amid a bevy of celeb audience members.
