With Bonnie & Clyde currently in previews at the Schoenfeld Theatre, Broadway.com asked readers which other infamous couple should have their story told on stage. The votes have been tallied. Take a look below to see which headline-making duos fans want to see take the Broadway stage.
1. John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe - 31%
While there are only rumors of an affair between America's 35th president and the screen icon, the duo will forever be linked thanks to Monroe's famous rendition of "Happy Birthday" delivered to Kennedy on his 45th birthday in 1962. Monroe's life was the subject of the short-lived 1983 Broadway musical, Marilyn. The upcoming Broadway-themed NBC series Smash will also trace the creative process of a musical about Monroe.
2. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton - 17%
Stage and screen icons Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's 12-year relationship began while filming Cleopatra when both were still married. They later starred in 10 other movies together including the film adaptation of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The couple married in 1964 and divorced in 1974. They remarried the following year, only to divorce again several months after, and reunited on Broadway in a brief 1983 revival of Private Lives.
3. King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson - 10%
Britain's King Edward VIII caused quite the stir when he fell in love with Wallis Simpson, a divorced American. He eventually gave up the throne in order to marry Simpson. Their courtship was featured in the 2010 Oscar-winning film The King's Speech, whose stage version begins a U.K. tour next year, with sights set on an eventual Broadway mounting.
