Hurt Village, Starring Tonya Pinkins, Opens Off-Broadway

The world premiere of Katori Hall’s family drama Hurt Village opens February 27 at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre in off-Broadway’s new Signature Center. Directed by Patricia McGregor and starring Tony winner Tonya Pinkins, the limited engagaement concludes March 18.

Based on the true story of the Hurt Village housing project in Memphis, Tennessee, the play tells the story of Cookie and her family, who must relocate when the city is awarded a government Hope grant to demolish their apartment. When Cookie’s father Buggy returns from Iraq, he must learn to find a new place in the disintegrating community while repairing his relationship with Cookie.

In addition to Pinkins, Hurt Village also stars Marsha Stephanie Blake as Crank, Corey Hawkins as Buggy, Joaquina Kalukango as Cookie, Nicholas Christopher as Cornbread, Charlie Hudson III as Ebony, Ron Cephas Jones as Tony C., Saycon Sengbloh as Toyia and Lloyd Watts as Skillet.

The Hurt Village design team features set and projection designer David Gallo, costume designer Clint Ramos, lighting designer Sarah Sidman and sound designer Robert Kaplowitz.
