On February 28, Tony winner Tonya Pinkins and the cast of Hurt Village brought the scorching Memphis heat to off-Broadway’s Signature Center. The world premiere drama by Katori Hall became the very first production at the new Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre. Also starring Joaquina Kalukango, Corey Hawkins and Marsha Stephanie Blake, Hurt Village is the story of Cookie (Kalukango), a 13-year-old aspiring rapper whose family must relocate when their housing project faces demolition. After taking their opening night bows, Pinkins and the company, including Hall and director Patricia McGregor, headed to the new Signature Center cafe to celebrate the big event.
