The Nightingale, a new musical from Spring Awakening team Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, will play San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse during its 2012-2013 season. Directed by Moisés Kaufman, the production will begin performances on July 10 and run through August 5. No casting or additional creative team members have been announced.
The musical is a contemporary rendering of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of a young emperor, who finds his heart in the song of a bird and the soul of a servant girl.
The Nightingale previously received a concert reading July 8-10, 2011 at Vassar College's Powerhouse Theatre as part of the musical workshops at New York Stage and Film. The reading featured Broadway vets Michael Cerveris, Harriet Harris, Michael Esper, Uzo Aduba and Ariel Jacobs.
In addition to The Nightingale, the La Jolla Playhouse season features a world premiere of the musical Hands on a Hardbody, J.T. Rogers’ Blood and Gifts, Denis O’Hare’s An Illiad (currently running at off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Glengarry Glen Ross.
