Get ready to fall under the spell of Raúl Esparza as Jonas Nightingale, a part-time reverend and full-time con artist in Leap of Faith. With his troupe of singers, Nightingale (Esparza) has journeyed far and wide, rattling the rafters, conning the crowds and trading miracles for money but when he makes an unplanned stop in Kansas, Sheriff Marla Humes, played by the Jessica Phillips, is the one woman standing in his way. Before Alan Menken and Glenn Slater’s gospel-tinged new musical leaps onto Broadway, Esparza, Phillips and the rest of the creative team, including choreographer Sergio Trujillo and director Christopher Ashley, chatted up New York theater press at the New 42nd Street Studios on March 8.
