The first-ever cast recording of the cult musical Carrie will be released by Ghostlight Records on September 25. The previously announced recording features MCC's off-Broadway revival cast, led by 2012 Drama Desk nominees Marin Mazzie and Molly Ranson. The musical's composer Michael Gore and Grammy winner Joel Moss, along with Ghostlight's Kurt Deutsch, produced the album. MCC’s revival of Carrie closed at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on April 8.
Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, Carrie tells the story of a tormented girl (Ranson) with telekinetic powers, and her relationships with her overbearing mother (Mazzie) and the mean kids at school.
The original 1988 Broadway production of Carrie starred Betty Buckley and Linzi Hateley and closed after only five performances with no cast album officially recorded. For decades, the musical was considered one of the Great White Way’s biggest flops. MCC’s Carrie featured eight additional songs with music and lyrics by Gore and Dean Pitchford and an updated book by Lawrence D. Cohen, who previously wrote the screenplay for the novel's 1976 film adaptation.
