British film actor Robert Powell will join the cast of the West End’s Singin’ in the Rain as studio boss RF Simpson. Directed by Jonathan Church, the musical adaptation of the iconic film features music and lyrics by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed. Powell begins performances October 1 at London’s Palace Theatre.
In addition to Powell, Singin’ in the Rain stars Adam Cooper as Don Lockwood, Daniel Crossley as Cosmo Brown, Scarlett Strallen as Kathy Selden, Katherine Kingsley as Lina Lamont and Sandra Dickinson as Dora Bailey and Miss Dinsmore. The production also features Peter Forbes, David Lucas, Brendan Cull, Kelly Ewins, Nancy Wei George, David Birch, Matthew Croke, Danielle Crockford, Jennifer Davison, Jaye Juliette Elster, Luke Fetherston, Gemma Fuller, Francis Haugen, Daniel Iannou, Peter Le Brun, Charlie Martin, Scott Mobley, Gillian Parkhouse, Sherrie Pennington, Lisa Ritchie and Jack Wilcox.
Based on the 1952 film of the same name, Singin’ in the Rain is the story of Don Lockwood (Cooper), a Hollywood movie star who is making the challenging transition from silent films to talkies. The musical features classic hits including “Make ‘Em Laugh,” “Good Morning,” “Moses Supposes” and of course, “Singin’ in the Rain.”
Best known for playing the title role in Jesus of Nazareth, Powell's many film and TV credits include The Italian Job, Secrets, Running Scared, Holby City, The Detectives, The Thirty Nine Steps, Harlequin, Jane Austen in Manhattan, The Survivor, What Waits Below, The Jigsaw Man and the 1975 film adaptation of Tommy.
