John Doyle to Direct Broadway Revival of Country Rock Musical Pump Boys and Dinettes

The working-class musical Pump Boys and Dinettes will return to Broadway during the spring of 2013 at a theater yet to be announced. Written and concieved by the original Broadway company—Tony winner Debra Monk, John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann—Pump Boys and Dinettes will be directed by John Doyle. No casting for the revival has been announced at this time.

Set on Highway 57, Pump Boys and Dinettes is the story of four hard-working men at a gas station: Jim, Eddie, Jackson and L.M. The Cupp sisters, Prudie and Rhetta, work right next door at the Double Cupp Diner. Together, the six friends sing of heartbreak and joy while playing a variety of musical instruments including guitar, piano, bass, fiddle, banjo, ukulele, harmonica and even kitchen utensils.

Pump Boys and Dinettes originally opened on February 4, 1982 at Broadway’s Princess Theatre. The production ran for 573 performances before closing on June 18, 1983. The show earned a 1982 Tony nomination for Best Musical.

Doyle won a Tony Award for his direction of Sweeney Todd, and an additional nomination for Company. In both productions, Doyle’s cast members also accompanied themselves on various musical instruments. Doyle also directed A Catered Affair on Broadway.
