Head to Joe's Pub to Join the PigPen Theatre Co. for a Fantastic Night of First-Rate Folk Music

The guys of the PigPen Theatre Co. (the recent Carnegie Mellon grads making a splash downtown with their delightful new play The Old Man and the Old Moon) are putting their shadow puppets down and arming themselves with a bevy of banjos, accordians, fiddles and other old-timey instruments at Joe's Pub. While their current Monday night concert series features several songs from The Old Man and the Old Moon (think Peter and the Starcatcher meets Once), the concert format allows the group's rich songwriting skills and incredible musicianship to shine without taking a backseat to plot. Thunderous drumming combined with lush, folksy melodies and lyrical storytelling make the group's music sound as if it's emanating from an Appalachian coal mine or 18th century shipyard, rather than a group of 21st century 23-year-olds. The band's charm and good looks don't hurt either: The seven member group is a troubadour answer to the current boy band renaissance led by One Direction and The Wanted. As folk rock continues its ascent into the mainstream (with groups like Mumford & Sons selling out arenas across the world) spending an evening with PigPen is an excellent opportunity to let this powerful grassroots music wash over you in an intimate setting.
