New York’s Public Theater will collaborate with Miami’s GableStage and the Royal Shakespeare Company for what is being touted as a “radical new staging” of William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Antony and Cleopatra. The production will be presented at Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2013, followed by an engagement at Miami’s Gusman Center for the Performing Arts in January 2014. The production will then head to the Public Theater later that month.
The new production of Antony and Cleopatra will be set in the late 1700s in Saint-Domingue, on the eve of the Haitian Revolution against the French. Casting for the production has not yet been announced, though the show will feature a cast of both U.K. and U.S. actors pulled from London, Miami and New York.
The play will be directed by Tarell Alvin McCraney, who created the re-structured show in 2010. McCraney represents a meeting of all three companies: the Miami native served a residency at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010 and premiered his plays The Brothers Size and The Brother/Sister Plays at the Public Theater in 2007 and 2009, respectively.
