Ramin Karimloo Eyes Playing Jean Valjean in Toronto Run of Les Miserables

Ramin Karimloo may once again get branded with the tattoo of prisoner 24601. The actor might take on the starring role of Jean Valjean in an upcoming production of Les Miserables, according to The Toronto Star. The Tony Award-winning musical would begin in September as part of the 2013-2014 Mirvish season. No word yet on which of the four Mirvish theaters Les Miz will play.

The Toronto production would include changes made by producer Cameron Mackintosh and the creative team for the musical’s 25th anniversary tour, which is currently performing around the United States. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables follows an ex-con Jean Valjean (Karimloo) as he attempts to make a better life for himself and his adopted daughter in 1800s France.

In addition to Karimloo, Toronto’s Les Miserables will feature Canadian Idol winner Melissa O’Neil as Eponine, Mark Uhre as Enjolras, Genevieve Leclerc as Fantine and Cliff Saunders as Monsieur Thénardier. Lisa Horner may play Saunders’ wife Madame Thénardier. No word yet on who will play the pivotal roles of Javert, Marius or Cosette.

Karimloo originated the role of the Phantom in the West End run of the Phantom of the Opera sequel, Love Never Dies. He has also starred as Valjean in the West End production of Les Miserables, as well as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera. He played the Phantom again in the 25th Anniversary concert of The Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert Hall in London. His other theater credits include Pirates of Penzance, Jesus Christ Superstar and Miss Saigon.

Les Miserables first opened in Toronto in 1989 and ran until 1990. The show was then revived in 1991, 1992, 1998 and 2005. The film adaptation of the musical, starring Hugh Jackman as Valjean, won three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy.
