If you’ve got a hankering for classic jazz, get ready to sashay to the Little Shubert Theatre, where Lady Day will holding court beginning September 19. Tony and Grammy winner Dee Dee Bridgewater is breathing new life into legendary singer Billie Holiday in the bio play with music, written and directed by Stephen Stahl. Bridgewater is joined on stage by David Ayers and Rafael Poueriet, as well as onstage musicians James Cammack (bass player for Ahmad Jamal), Ken Hitchcock (sax player for Elvin Jones and Buddy Rich), Jerome Jennings (drummer for Benny Golson and Sonny Rollins) and three-time Emmy-winning pianist Bill Jolly. The entire production pays tribute to the late, great singer, featuring hit songs from Holiday’s catalogue including “Don’t Explain,” “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.” Click through our gallery of photos from the press meet-and-greet on August 27, and catch Lady Day off-Broadway this fall!
