The Crown, Based on Peter Morgan's The Audience, May Get the Royal Treatment on Netflix

We're still waiting for The Audience to play Broadway, but a Netflix series works, too! The Crown, a political drama series based on Oscar and Tony nominee Peter Morgan’s play, could soon be coming to the small screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is close to completing a deal with Morgan and Oscar nominee and Tony winner Stephen Daldry, who directed The Audience in the West End.

The Audience follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to the Diamond Jubilee in 2012. For 50 years, the Queen has sat with all of England’s Prime Ministers for private, weekly meetings at Buckingham Palace. The play aims to break the silence on these highly secretive meetings. The Audience played London’s Gielgud Theatre last year, with Oscar winner Helen Mirren reprising the role of Queen Elizabeth II (a role for which she won the Oscar in Morgan’s The Queen.)

In addition to The Audience and The Queen, Morgan’s writing credits include both the play and film adaptation of Frost/Nixon, for which he received a Tony and Oscar nod. Daldry won Tony Awards for his direction of Billy Elliot and An Inspector Calls. He was also nominated for an Oscar for Billy Elliot, as well as for The Reader and The Hours.
