Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning playwright Bruce Norris will present the New York premiere of The Qualms as part of Playwrights Horizons’ 2014-15 season. The new play joins a previously announced lineup that includes Bootycandy, Grand Concourse, Pocatellop, Placebo and Iowa. Tony winner Pam MacKinnon, who directed Norris’ Clybourne Park on Broadway and at Playwrights Horizons, will helm the production. Performances will begin on May 22, 2015 at the company’s Mainstage Theater off-Broadway. Casting will be announced at a later date.
The Qualms explores the struggle for power and the sexual politics of, well, getting laid. It tells the story of newly-married Chris and Kristy, who attend an alcohol-fueled party for swingers and find themselves at odds with the idea of free love and, suddenly, each other.
The Qualms is currently playing its world premiere at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where it is set to open officially on July 13. In addition to Clybourne Park, Norris’ other works include Domesticated, A Parallelogram, The Unmentionables, The Pain and the Itch and We All Went Down to Amsterdam.
