Million Dollar Quartet — Nominee for Best Musical

April 11, 2010

The Story:
Famed Sun Records music producer Sam Phillips is laying down new tracks with rockabilly icon Carl Perkins. Rising hotshot piano player Jerry Lee Lewis is making money as one of the session musicians. Seizing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have “his boys” together in one room, Perkins invites chart-toppers Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley to come by for an impromptu jam session.

Based On:
History, with a bit of dramatic flourish. But these four rock ‘n’ roll icons did have an actual meet-up on December 4, 1956, at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee

Show History:
In 2006, an early version of the show bowed at Orlando’s Seaside Music Theatre in Daytona Beach, Florida, before playing Seattle’s Village Theatre. It debuted in Chicago at the Goodman Theatre in 2008, before transferring for an open run at the Apollo Theater, where it’s now in its second year.

Book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux

Relevant Theatricals, John Cossette Productions, American Pop Anthology, Broadway Across America and James L. Nederlander

Other Honors:
—Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue

Fun Fact:
Interested in the real identity of Elvis’ “mystery” girlfriend in the show (who is given the fictional name of Dyanne), a Chicago Tribune reporter tracked her down in 2008. Marilyn Knowles-Riehl, 71, said of her role in the historic event: "It's like people whose high point of their life is their senior prom. My senior prom was good, but a lot of stuff has happened that's been great since then."
