Story

Tony® & Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington stars as Othello, the noble Moor of Venice and commanding warrior-general. Opposite him, Tony & Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Iago, the ambitious lieutenant and masterful manipulator.

Spurned for promotion, Iago’s relentless quest for vengeance against Othello and his wife, Desdemona (portrayed by Molly Osborne), plunges them into a shocking web of deception and betrayal.

Brilliant Lead Performances in an Overall Stellar Show!
"Seeing two A-listers on stage at the same time is breathtaking. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a masterful performance as Iago, as if he was born to play this role and has been doing it for months rather than in week 2 of previews. Denzel is a legend and his Othello is like no other. The production is further elevated by the rest of the outstanding cast. We were seated in the back row and felt right at the heart of the action, as there is not a bad seat in the intimate setting of the Barrymore Theatre. This show is worth every penny!"

Worth every penny!
"Wow, amazing performances by everyone. We came to see Denzel and he did not disappoint. However, Jake Gyllenhaal stole the show! He is so underrated as it is, but to see him perform up close (we were in the front row) took my breath away. What a talent! The set was a little underwhelming, but it gave way for the performances to really shine, since it was clear the ticket prices were based on that. "

Othello Sticks to story line.
"I liked the authenticity of the actors. Although surprised, I was lukewarm about the performance being modern day versus period. The storyline doesn't quite fit with modern day. Some folks might be pleased about classic story performed with modern day themes. "

Great performers
"Being a Shakespeare’s you know will be long and at times the dialogue a bit confusing, but the cast transports you to the drama with them. Denzel and Jake take it to another level, not taking anything away from other talented actors. "

Othello at its finest
"I was a Shakespeare student since I was 13 and have read Othello many times and seen Verdi's version in opera form. I believe Jake Kuykendall and Denztel Washington nailed it. They captured the essence of the meaning of the play, and their language was intelligible and the plot was easy to follow. I believe their acting was top notch. The rest of the cast were also superb and did their roles at the highest level. For someone seeking to understand on of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies, this is a great example and place enjoy it in modern form."

Tremendous
"It was truly a surreal experience to see such tremendous and accomplished actors in an actors’ dream play. The performances by the two principles and, in fact, the entire cast were truly at the highest level. We felt very fortunate to be able to be part of the audience last night. "

Denzel powerful subtlety
"Othello is truly a Shakespeare Tragedy set in a modern era but still retains the themes of deceit, power, ego and love. The cast was superb and supportive with Denzel as the power and rhythm of the story."

Shakespearean language
"Initially I thought the language would make it difficult to understand and to follow along but it didn’t. It was amazing not to mention 2 of Hollywood’s biggest actors. Superb!"
