The portrait that inspired the costume: "We wanted to copy Nina's outfit from the well-known photo by Carol Friedman," explains Soul Doctor designer Maggie Morgan. "We wanted an iconic, glamorous, recognizable image of Nina with showstopping qualities for the opening number and finale. The coat-dress is red silk satin and the turban is gold eyelash velvet."
