Haunted by her memories and dreams, movie star Norma Desmond yearns to return to the big screen. A struggling screenwriter who can’t sell his scripts to the Hollywood studios may be her only hope, until their dangerous and captivating relationship leads to disaster. Drenched in champagne and cynicism, Sunset Boulevard focuses the lens on the ambitions and frustrations of its characters and puts their intoxicating need for fame and adoration in stark close-up.
"Sunset Blvd. is absolutely mesmerizing from the opening scene to the curtain call. Film Noir hits the stage and Broadway embraces the union with grit, grace, and gifted creativity and talent. "

"I heard about the show on ‘Live With Kelly & Mark’ who said ‘run, don’t walk’. I was pleased to attend the 1st matinee after premiere & having seen Glenn Close in the role, I was wowed by this leading lady, unknown to me at the time.
The reimagined version was unlike anything I’ve seen in over 6 decades of B’way! I’d somehow missed any upfront info on the actors involved & was entranced by them throughout the performance. The audience was engaged throughout & to say the opening of the second act was wildly received would be an understatement!
Bravo to all involved in this production which I hope will have a long run."

"Nicole Scherzinger is stupendous as Norma Desmond - haughty, beautiful, and completely unhinged. Her singing and acting in this iconic role were utterly flawless. It is an epoch defining performance; for me, as thrilling as seeing Joan Sutherland as Norma, or Pavarotti in Luisa Miller.
Other cast members were compelling and effective in their roles, although eclipsed by Scherzinger whenever she was on stage. Tom Francis’ Joe Gillis was a highlight, particularly his bravura performance of Sunset Boulevard. David Thaxton as Max von Mayerling was in wonderful voice, sinister and note perfect in his characterisation. Grace Hodgett Young’s Betty was less carefully drawn than other characters, but to be fair this was more a flaw in the book than an issue with her acting or singing. The love between Betty and Gillis appeared out of nowhere in this version, making her showdown with Norma in Act 2 feel hollow and perfunctory.
Jamie Lloyd’s staging makes highly effective use of light, smoke and shadow in a way that conveys the inner world of each character in a better way than the dusty old house set in the original production I saw in London in 1993. His reworking of the script has rearranged some scenes and cut others in a way that centres Norma’s descent into madness, often at the expense of the story being played out by other characters. This is Sunset Boulevard as Greek tragedy, Norma Desmond as Clytemnestra.
The use of live film projection is hugely effective in this show, both in conveying the references to silent film, bringing Scherzinger’s characterisation of Norma Desmond, silent film Goddess, to life (honestly, her take on silent film acting gives Gloria Swanson in the Billy Wilder film, or Bette Davis in Baby Jane a run for their money without ever descending into caricature. She never seems to be self-consciously “acting”; she completely inhabits this delusional diva), as well as allowing the startling 4th wall break at the beginning of Act 2."

"I loved the Glenn Close version and hope to see that movie soon. This is completely modernized and it completely works perfectly. No need to compare the two, they are each their own brilliance. I loved Tom Francis in this, and Nicole should have been on Broadway before now. Both voices are electric. I love this director and his vision , as I saw Cyrano with James McAvoy directed by him as well. Makes you want to see more from him. Kudos to Norma, Joe, and Max in this version. I really think Norma and Joe will win the Tony, as well as director and revival"

"Sunset Boulevard's current run in Broadway (St. James Theater), while a reworked iteration, still evokes its larger-than-life ethos, a paean to old Hollywood and classic Broadway. While clearly doubling down on technology, the presentation has instinctively held on to its organic roots, offering new elements seamlessly. As a Filipino rooting for Nicole S as Miss Desmond, I was awestruck by and blown away with her tasteful and nuanced performance. Indeed, she's ready for her close-up---poignant, personal and with panache."
