What Is the Story of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike?
Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their movie star sister, Masha, swoops in with her hot young boyfriend, Spike, amid threats to sell the house. Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra, who can predict the future, and a lovely young aspiring actress named Nina, whose presence irritates the imperious Masha.

Critics’ Reviews

The kind of full-on comedy that’s rare on Broadway. It makes you laugh out loud, and repeatedly at that.

Review by Elisabeth Vincentelli from The New York Post

One of the funniest comedies Broadway has seen in seasons.

Review by Linda Winer from Newsday

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Like?
Comic playwright Christopher Durang has borrowed characters and plotlines from Chekhov and remixed them in this gently wacky family comedy, starring Sigourney Weaver as Masha and David Hyde Pierce as Vanya. You don’t need to know anything about the source material to enjoy the show, which includes an appealing mix of monologues, funny confrontation scenes and nutty preparation for a costume party (with Sigourney Weaver turned out in a Snow White costume!). If you long to see a classic stage comedy with a twist of Durang-style absurdist humor, you will definitely enjoy spending an evening with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

Is Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Good for Kids?
Not really. Although there’s nothing objectionable in the play, the sophisticated jokes will go over kids’ heads and the ennui of a bunch of middle-aged people won’t interest them.
