The Broadway musical
A Tale of Two Cities provided unintentional commentary on the nation's financial woes during an October 11 live television glitch. As President George W. Bush made a speech on the economy, the New York NBC affiliate, WNBC-TV, briefly interrupted the speech by cutting to the show's oft-played commercial.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times," the voiceover on the brief clip of the commercial stated, as images of leading man James Barbour raising a flask and a guillotine falling were shown. Then suddenly, it was back to Bush.
"During the President's speech this morning, we experienced a four-second technical issue and inadvertently interrupted his message," WNBC said in a statement to The New York Daily News. "We fixed the problem quickly and apologize for the error."
A Tale of Two Cities opened on September 18 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
