Colin Hanks
Colin Hanks and Samantha Mathis are among the cast members who will join Jane Fonda in the upcoming Broadway production of Moisés Kaufman’s 33 Variations. The play will begin previews on February 9 and open on March 9 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, directed by the author. The limited engagement is scheduled to continue through May 24.

Joining Fonda, Hanks and Mathis will be Zach Grenier (A Man for All Seasons, Laughter on the 23rd Floor) as Beethoven, Don Amendolia (Some Men, My One and Only) as Anton Diabelli, Susan Kellermann (Last Licks, Whose Life Is It Anyway) as Dr. Gertie Ladenburger, Erik Steele (Inherit the Wind, Tartuffe) as Anton Schindler, with classical pianist Diane Walsh as the show’s onstage Pianist.

33 Variations centers on Katherine Brandt (Fonda), a musicologist trying to solve a centuries-old mystery about the world’s greatest composer. Her obsession with Beethoven takes her from present-day New York to 19th-century Austria. As the music that consumes Katherine comes to life on stage, she races against time to find common ground with her daughter, Clara (Mathis) and to embrace the legacy of her own life. Hanks has been cast as Katherine's nurse, Mike Clark.

Hanks, who will make his Broadway debut in 33 Variations, starred in the London production of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth. He played Father Gil (opposite Speed-the-Plow star Elisabeth Moss) in the second season of Mad Men and appeared in two episodes of the series Numb3rs. His many recent films include W, House Bunny, Untraceable, Orange County and the forthcoming The Great Buck Howard.

Samantha Mathis
Mathis appeared on Broadway opposite Chris O’Donnell in the revival of Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All the Luck and co-starred with Linda Lavin in the Los Angeles production of Collected Stories. TV credits include an upcoming recurring role on Grey’s Anatomy (Melinda), For One More Day and Lost. Movie credits include Pump up the Volume, The Thing Called Love, American Psycho and the upcoming The New Daughter, with Kevin Costner.

The design team includes Derek McLane (sets), Janice Pytel (costumes), David C. Woolard (additional costumes), David Lander (lights), André Pluess (sound), Jeff Sugg (projection design), Charles LaPointe (hair/wig design) and Daniel Pelzig (choreography).

David Binder is the producer of 33 Variations alongside Ruth Hendel, Barbara Whitman, Hal Goldberg, Eric Schnall, Jayne Baron Sherman, Arielle Tepper Madover and Latitude Link.
