Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe makes his Broadway debut as Alan Strang, a seemingly normal, obedient 17-year-old stable hand. Then one night he blinds six of the animals with a hoof pick. SHOULD I SEE IT?

What’s the Story of Equus?
Equus tells the story of Martin Dysart, a disenchanted psychiatrist whose life takes a turn when a disturbed young man, Alan Strang, is brought into custody after blinding six horses with a spike. After a heated introduction, Dysart slowly befriends Strang, who opens up about his family, his childhood and his fondness for horses–an admiration so passionate it borders on the religious. The more Strang shares, the more Dysart becomes envious of the young man’s fervent spirit and unbridled enthusiasm for the things he loves. So much that when the solution for Strang’s troubles comes into focus, Dysart sizes up his own crestfallen existence and worries if “curing” this young man will also deaden his soul.

What Is Equus Like?
With its three-hour length, wordy monologues (delivered in British accents!) and frequent horse metaphors, Equus sounds like a challenging show on paper. But we assure you, this is an accessible, engrossing night at the theater. Some moments are very funny, and others quite gripping, as if you’re watching a thriller. Though spare and minimal, the set is designed in such a way that makes the Broadhurst Theatre seem like the Roman Coliseum. Not many Broadway shows make audience members feel like they’re watching a spectator sport, but Equus definitely does.

Is Equus Good for Kids?
Given that the show stars Daniel Radcliffe, young Harry Potter fans are likely to express interesting. But be warned: Radcliffe and cast mate Anna Camp spend the last seven minutes of the play entirely nude, engaging in not-suitable-for-primetime behavior. The play itself touches on some unconventional themes, too, as the sexual element that drives Strang’s attraction to horses is presented rather explicitly. However, young adults will connect with the story, since it deals directly with the fear of growing up and facing the future. That said, if you think your teen can handle such subversive material, this accessible production will make for a riveting introduction to the theater.
