The 2010 Tony Awards are just around the corner, and as Broadway buzzes about which show will become the first musical of the decade to take home the big prize, we asked readers to vote for their favorite Best Musical winner from the 00s. The results are in…and it does not suck to be Avenue Q! The 2004 Tony winner (which is still running off-Broadway) dominated the poll, pulling in a whopping 41% of the votes.
Following in second place with 21% of the votes were the emotional teens of Spring Awakening, the Duncan Sheik-penned rock musical that took home eight Tonys in 2007. The 2002 winner Thoroughly Modern Millie danced its way to third place with 9% of the votes, while still-running hit In the Heights (the 2008 Tony winner) heated up fourth place with 7% of the votes. Hairspray, the decade’s longest running Best Musical Tony winner, rounded out the top five, scoring 5%.
