There’s a special summer treat on the way from Lincoln Center Theater: the world premiere of A.R. Gurney’s The Grand Manner, starring Kate Burton, Boyd Gaines and Bobby Steggert. This love letter to the stage is based on a true story: In 1948, Gurney, then a boarding school student, traveled to New York to see a performance of Antony and Cleopatra, going backstage afterward to meet the star, Katharine Cornell. Tony nominee Steggert plays Pete (the playwright’s young alter ego) alongside Burton as Cornell and three-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines as the actress’ husband, director Guthrie McClintic. Rounding out the cast is Brenda Wehle as Cornell’s pal and business manager. As you’ll see from Joan Marcus’ production photos, the play promises to take audiences back to the theater's golden age, thanks to Ann Hould Ward’s costumes and a fabulous cast. The Grand Manner is set to open at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre on June 27. We can't wait!
