The Notebook, the bestselling Nicolas Sparks novel which became a 2004 tearjerker film of the same name, may become a Broadway musical, the author said on CBS' The Early Show.
After discussing Sparks’ body of work and subsequent screen adaptations, the morning show’s co-host inquired about a stage adaptation of the New York Times bestseller. “We’re still in development of this process,” Sparks said. “Obviously The Notebook is going to be some sort of musical and a lot of fun to be getting involved in that process, too.”
Nick Cassavetes directed the film adaptation, which starred Hollywood favorites Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple from very different stations in life who fall in love in the 1940s South. As for possible Broadway casting, Sparks had no tales to tell. “Gosh, I don't know,” he said, “someone who can sing!” He also made no mention of any creative team members, but a musical version of the story has been written by composing team Bethany Joy Galeotti (best known as an actress on One Tree Hill) and Ron Aniello, who presented it as a reading in Wilmington, North Carolina in October 2009.
