Mike Bartlett’s Chariots of Fire, a film adaptation of the 1981 film of the same name, will make its world premiere at the U.K.’s Hampstead Theatre this spring. Helmed by Hampstead Theatre artistic director Edward Hall, the production will begin performances on May 9. The limited engagement will run until June 16. Casting has not yet been announced.
Chariots of Fire tells the story of two track athletes—one Christian and one Jew—who overcome the odds to compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson, the film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Bartlett has also written Love, Love, Love, Earthquakes in London and Cock, which won an Olivier Award.
The production’s creative team will include designer Miriam Buether, lighting designer Rick Fisher, choreographer Scott Ambler and sound designer Paul Groothuis, with original music by Vangelis and additional music by Jason Carr.
