Eight-time Tony-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim received a U.K. Critics’ Circle Award for Distinguished Services to the Arts on March 9. The 24th annual award ceremony was held at the Mernier Chocolate Factory in London.
Sondheim has written music and lyrics for numerous Broadway shows including Follies, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, Company, Assassins, Sunday in the Park With George, Pacific Overtures and Merrily We Roll Along. Sondheim’s Into the Woods is scheduled to open at the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park in Central Park this summer. The composer is also currently collaborating with playwright David Ives (Venus in Fur) on a new musical.
Previous recipients of the U.K.’s prestigious Critics’ Circle Award for Distinguished Services to the Arts include Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Tom Stoppard, Harold Pinter and Sir Ian McKellen.
