Grammy winner Melissa Etheridge is composing a new musical, according to Billboard.com. The rocker and American Idiot alum is currently collaborating on a production she describes as "more along the lines of a classic musical, yet more of a rock musical" with Nurse Jackie co-creator Linda Wallem. No word on if Etheridge hopes to bring the show to Broadway.
"I keep talking about it," said Etheridge, who is currently prepping for a new album and tour. "I keep going, 'OK, after this album, I'll talk about it some more.' It needs to get done, but it's just me and Linda, and we have our day jobs that keep it really busy. But I want to do it right and make it be something that lasts."Etheridge remained mum on plot details but said the show will involve "New York City. Piano bars. That's all I'm going to say until we finish it."
Etheridge played the role of St. Jimmy in American Idiot for week-long run in 2011. She also joined the cast of Million Dollar Quartet for a post-show performance in 2010. Ethridge has received Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal twice for "Ain't It Heavy" and "Come to My Window." She is also known for hits such as "Bring Me Some Water" and "I'm the Only One.”
