Olivier winner Sheridan Smith, who was previously announced to headline the West End musical adaptation of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’ Diary, has pulled out of the project, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail. The new musical, featuring music by Lily Allen, was set to begin rehearsals in August and open at the Savoy Theatre in the fall. Reportedly, Smith did not want to commit to the musical’s run.
Bridget Jones’ Diary originated in 1995 as a newspaper column by Helen Fielding in The Independent. Fielding published two novels based on the column, which were adapted into two films starring Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.
Smith won an Olivier Award for Legally Blonde and earned a nomination for Little Shop of Horrors. Her TV credits include Gavin and Stacey and Two Pints of a Lager and a Packet of Crips.
