Oscar and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin fired the majority of the writing staff of his new series The Newsroom, according to EW.com. About half of the writers on the HBO show will not return for the show’s second season (though some reports claim that all the writers were fired except Sorkin’s ex-girlfriend, Corinne Kinsbury). HBO renewed the new drama on July 2 for a second season, despite mixed reviews for the first seaon, which is currently airing on Sundays.
Newsroom stars Broadway veterans Jeff Daniels, Alison Pill, John Gallagher Jr., Thomas Sadoski, Jane Fonda and Sam Waterston as well as Emily Mortimer, Olivia Munn and Dev Patel.
The series centers on a cable news anchor (Daniels), his new executive producer (Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Pill, Gallagher, Munn, Patel and Sadoski) and their boss (Waterston). Together they set out on a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.
