Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich will return to the New York stage in 2013 to star in The Giacomo Variations at New York City Center. Directed by Michael Sturminger, Malkovich will star as legendary lover Giacomo Casanova alongside Ingeborga Dapkünaité in this Cherry Orchard Festival production. New York City Center will host the American premiere of The Giacomo Variations May 31 through June 2, 2013.
Writer, poet, gambler, military man, prison escapee, friend of princes, popes and cardinals, and above all, lover, from 1725 to 1798, the Venetian author and adventurer Giacomo Casanova has surely lived one of the most extraordinary lives of all time. But what worth has a rich and colorful life, when you are soon to die? The Giacomo Variations will features scenes based on excerpts from Casanova's 1790 memoir, Histoire de ma vie and will include live Mozart pieces from the Wiener Academy Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Martin Haselböck.
A charter member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Malkovich won an Obie Award for his performance in True West. He appeared on Broadway in Burn This, Death of a Salesman, The Caretaker and Arms and the Man. He received an Emmy Award for recreating the role of Biff Loman in the TV movie Death of a Salesman and received Oscar nominations for his work in Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire. Malkovich’s other film credits include Of Mice and Men, Dangerous Liaisons, Empire of the Sun, The Killing Fields, Con Air and Being John Malkovich.
