Emmy winner America Ferrera has been tapped to star in Bethany, a dark comedy from playwright Laura Marks that will kick off the Women’s Project Theater’s new season, according to The New York Times. Bethany will be directed by Gale Taylor Upchurch and will run at New York City Center Stage II from January 11 through February 17.
Bethany follows Crystal (Ferrera), a financially-challenged woman who struggles to make ends meet in an extra-urban commuter town overwhelmed with foreclosed properties. The theater’s artistic director Julie Crosby added that the show deals with the fading vision of the American dream and the growing issue of home foreclosure in the United States.
Ferrera is best-known to audiences for her role as the title character on ABC’s Ugly Betty, which earned her an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award. She last appeared off-Broadway in 2005’s Dog Sees God and will appear in the 11th annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway on November 12. She recently starred as Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago.
