History comes to life in the best possible way in Checkers, Douglas McGrath’s fascinating new drama about the scandal that almost pushed Richard Nixon off the ticket as General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s running mate in the 1952 presidential election. (The play’s name refers to Nixon’s career-saving television speech in which he invoked the family dog, Checkers.) On November 11, Tony winner Anthony LaPaglia and Law & Order: Criminal Intent vet Kathryn Erbe celebrated their star turns as Richard and Pat Nixon in the Vineyard Theatre’s premiere production of the play at a party at Vic + Anthony’s Steakhouse.
