The Gershwin Theatre is green with more than leading character Elphaba. Wicked just broke a new record by becoming the first show to remain the highest-grossing production on Broadway for nine consecutive years. The musical beats the former record holder The Phantom of the Opera, which remained Broadway's top show for eight non-consecutive years (1988-91, 1993-94 and 1996-97).
That's not the only impressive record the blockbuster broke. The show had the highest-grossing week in Broadway history, taking in $2,947,172 for the week ending December 30 (when it played 9 performances).
Other shows that nabbed the top spot over the last three decades include La Cage aux Folles (1984), Cats (1985-86), Me and My Girl (1987), Show Boat (1995), Ragtime (1998), The Lion King (1999-2001 and 2003) and The Producers (2002).
As Wicked enters its 10th year on Broadway, the musical currently stars Jackie Burns as Elphaba, Alli Mauzey as Glinda, Kyle Dean Massey as Fiyero, Randy Danson as Made Morrible, Adam Grupper as the Wizard, Catherin Charlebois as Nessarose, Tom Flynne as Dr. Dillamond and F. Michael Haynie as Boq.
Seeing just how "Popular" Wicked really is calls for watching orignal stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth singing the catchy tune. Check them out below!
