Music executive Tommy Mottola may be taking his talented ear to the Broadway stage with three upcoming projects in the works, reports The New York Post.
Mottola will head up the previously reported musical version of A Bronx Tale (directed by first-time Broadway helmer Robert De Niro) as well as a musical adaptation of the 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly.
Super Fly will be directed by two-time Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones (Fela!), and will follow the original movie's plot about a cocaine dealer who goes for one last big deal before quitting the underworld drug business. The film featured a score by singer-songwriter Curtis Mayfield. Jersey Boys producer Michael David will also work on the project.
Mottola will also produce a third show, reportedly about a current “super-famous” celebrity. Though said celeb subject will not be Mottola's ex-wife Mariah Carey (maybe next time, Mimi!), could it be about former Mottola client Gloria Estefan, whose own biographical musical is also eyeing Broadway?
