Brynn O’Malley and Nicole Parker met about five years when they played sisters Nessarose and Elphaba in the blockbuster musical Wicked. Since then, Parker has appeared in Broadway’s The People in the Picture, and O’Malley currently stars as Grace Farrell in the Broadway revival of Annie. Broadway.com photographer Jenny Anderson spent an afternoon with these picture-perfect besties, frolicking in Madame Tussauds and exercising in Central Park. How and when did you meet your BFF?
Brynn: We met doing Wicked on Broadway in....2008?9? She was Elphaba and I was Nessa.
Nicole: We met doing Wicked together. It was in December of 2008, but I was just rehearsing and didn't join the show until January of the next year. She was such a great Nessa. It's kind of funny because when I met her for the very first time, our stage manager was taking me around the theater introducing me to cast members. He opened Brynn's door and she was apparently in the middle of canceling her debit card, which she had just lost. So it was not, like, good timing. I felt so bad and we just closed the door, and I thought, I will catch up with her, sometime...in the future, when she's got all her cards back : )
What was your first impression of each other?
Brynn: I thought she was tall and blonde and skinny and beautiful, and then sometime later on, I noticed she was also funny and real.
Nicole: Those bangs. Those bangin' bangs. And that she was smart and pretty funny and was going to be a lot of fun.
When was the moment you knew it was BFF material?
Brynn: The first time she made me laugh.
Nicole: Just realizing how easygoing and cool she was at our first rehearsal.
Name three adjectives to describe your BFF.
Brynn: Irreverent. Resilient. Hilarious.
Nicole: FUNNY. Ballsy. Genuine.
What do you call each other?
Brynn: Dude…or...sometimes I call her Nicole Parky.
Nicole: I call her Lady, but I call all my girlfriends that. I hope they like it. It's a term of endearment.
If you formed a band together, what would its name be?
Brynn: The Work Horses.
Nicole: Bangs 'n' Nose.
What’s the best gift your BFF ever got you?
Brynn: For my happy trails at Wicked, she handed me a beautiful piece of stationery upon which she had rewritten the lyrics to a song from Wicked...and that's all I will say.
Nicole: For my birthday one year, she sent me a video of her in her dressing room dressed as Nessa on the Wicked tour during a show. “Defying Gravity” was playing over the speaker, and she sang along with the whole number for me, full out, LOTS of enthusiasm. It was really hilarious and great.
What should the title of your BFF’s memoir be?
Brynn: Seriously??? Ugh. Fine. (A Life in the Theatre)
Nicole: Wait, I Can Major in Musical Theater? Well, Then Can I Major in Disneyland?: My Life After I Realized Majoring in Musical Theater Was Actually a Thing.
If you could be in any show together what would it be?
Brynn: I will write the prequel to Wicked called Milk Flowers and Green Gunk, and Nicole will do punch-up on it. We will play tweens and everybody will be on board with that.
Nicole: Mame. Oh man, that would be good. I don't know who would be who, but Mame for sure. We'll open right after I finish my run as Madame Morrible on the First National.
What annoying habits do you find adorable in your BFF?
Brynn: Her self-doubt. Precious!
Nicole: Her annoying habit of being adorable.
What trait do you admire most about each other?
Brynn: Without consulting (this is very Newlywed Game), I'm gonna say our senses of humor.
Nicole: The ability to laugh at it all.
Who is your friend’s celebrity equivalent and why?
Brynn: Nicole is her own celebrity equivalent. She was on MADtv. The end.
Nicole: Well, many people think she looks like Zooey Deschanel, or Katy Perry. I really wish the three of them would make a sitcom, where they play sisters who run a sandwich shop called “Which is 'wich?" That would also be the name of the show. Someone get this made.
What about your BFF makes you jealous?
Brynn: Her career. It's insane. TV, film, starring on Broadway. She's done it all. And somewhere in there she managed to find an awesome dude who has nothing to do with this business and marry him. Oh, but I forgot the part of her career that I am actually the MOST jealous of: her ability to write.
Nicole: Her tenacity and intelligence in navigating our tough business. I aspire to be more tough and strong like her. And...her boobs. Sorry. Just a horrible answer combining class and classlessness. I'm so sorry. But it's just true.
I can always count on my BFF to….
Brynn: Entertain me—either with a good story, a deadly accurate impression of someone, or a wry take on someone or something that makes me howl.
Nicole: Share a glass of wine with me while I recount the latest tale of woe or joy and listen intently, laugh along and always know what to say, whether it's to build me up or cheer me on.
