Send in the Klown! Comedian and actor John Leguizamo will film his one-man show Ghetto Klown at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Theatre on November 16, Deadline.com reports. The show, which played a Broadway engagement in 2011, will be filmed for a forthcoming HBO special. No airdates have been announced.
Directed by Fisher Stevens and written by Leguizamo, Ghetto Klown opened at the Lyceum Theatre on February 21, 2011. It played 25 preview performances and 95 total performances before closing on July 10, 2011. Based on Leguizamo’s memoir Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas, and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends: My Life, the show charts the story of his path from obscurity to stardom. In 2012, PBS aired the documentary Tales From a Ghetto Klown about Leguizamo’s life and the making of the one-man show. Leguizamo co-wrote and starred in Fugly!, a movie loosely based on Ghetto Klown, in 2013.
Leguizamo garnered Tony nominations for Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for his one-man show Freak. His additional Broadway credits include American Buffalo and Sexaholix. His many film and TV appearances include Ice Age, Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet and ER. Ghetto Klown will mark Leguizamo’s first HBO comedy special in 11 years.
