French novelist Colette first wrote Cheri, the controversial story of a six-year affair between a retired courtesan and a young man, in 1920. Now, director and choreographer Martha Clarke is breathing new life into the turn-of-the-century masterpiece at off-Broadway’s Pershing Square Signature Center. Featuring a combination of French music of the period, innovative dance and poetic text, the new work features ballet dancers Herman Cornejo as Cheri and Alessandra Ferri as Lea, and Oscar nominee Amy Irving as Cheri’s mother Charlotte. We’ve got a lyrical first look at the stars in action—click below to get a sneak peek of photos from the new production, then see Cheri like you’ve never seen it before at the Irene Diamond Stage through December 29!
