Could the birds of 'Rio' be flying to Broadway?

Those talking birds may be coming to Broadway! Producer Michael Cohl has revealed plans to stage a live version of the computer-animated 2011 film Rio, according to the Wall Street Journal. The show would launch in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil around the time of the 2016 Olympics in the city. Following that, the show would come to the Great White Way.

Cohl also announced that he intends to create a theatrical adaptation of another Fox title: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The show would tour theaters nationally beginning this winter.

Rio follows Blu, a macaw who was smuggled out of Brazil as a hatchling and grows up in Minnesota. When he returns to Rio de Janeiro, he falls in love with a fellow macaw, Jewel. They embark on an adventure together in their home country, while evading a scheming cockatoo named Nigel. The 2011 film featured the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jemaine Clement, George Lopez , will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and Jane Lynch.
