Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose Tony-nominated new musical School of Rock is sticking it to the man eight shows a week, may have found his next project. Set in the year he was born, 1948, it would follow the true tale of the passionate love affair between the late Botswanan president Seretse Khama and his white English wife Ruth Williams. “It’s such a fascinating story, and they went through the most awful times,” the composer told the Daily Mail. “But love ruled. And they loved music!”
The interracial marriage of Khama and Williams sparked a worldwide furor, and will soon be the subject for a movie starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, A United Kingdom.
Along with School of Rock, Lloyd Webber is also represented on Broadway by Phantom of the Opera; the first Main Stem revival of Cats is scheduled to begin performances on July 14. His other musicals include Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Sunset Boulevard. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tonys, seven Oliviers, three Grammys (as well as the Grammy Legend Award), an Oscar and the Kennedy Center Honor.
