Al Pacino to Headline Lyle Kessler's Orphans on Broadway

Al Pacino will star in Lyle Kessler's Orphans on Broadway this spring, according to The New York Post.

Orphans follows the plight of two brothers: the emotionally volatile Treat and the sweetly naive Phillip, who were orphaned at an early age. Living hand to mouth in Philadelphia the city of "brotherly love", Treat supports them both by thieving on a daily basis. This tentative existence is interrupted by Harold Pacino, a middle-aged businessman, whom they kidnap.

The play became popular after a highly successful mounting at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in the mid-1980s. It has been seen all over the world but has never played on Broadway before.

Next month Pacino will star in a workshop production of the piece at Los Angeles' Greenway Court Theatre. Broadway.com has learned that Orphans is expected to play Broadway's Barrymore Theatre, recently vacated by The Glass Menagerie.
