As we eagerly await the reviews for Love Never Dies, the Phantom of the Opera sequel opening in London on March 9, we’ve tallied the results from our latest weekend poll, in which we asked which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical you’d most like to see revived on Broadway. The big winner? Evita, Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s larger-than-life retelling of the life story of Argentine president Eva Peron. More than a quarter of those voting among 10 musicals felt that the blonde bombshell politico would “be surprisingly good for” the Great White Way (not to mention hubby Juan Peron).
Coming in second was Cats, which reigned as Broadway’s longest running show until Lloyd Webber’s masked man surpassed it. A total of 18% of those voting hoped for a return of Grizabella, the Rum Tum Tugger and the rest of the feline flock. Norma Desmond came in third, with Sunset Boulevard drawing 16% of the vote. Rounding out the top five were Lloyd Webber’s pair of scripture-based tuners: Jesus Christ Superstar (12%) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (11%). (Nobody, alas, wants to see By Jeeves. Too British?)
Evita fans may get their wish if a rumored transfer of the London production that starred Elena Roger makes it to Broaadway in the next couple of seasons.
