Ashford's big break came when she was cast as a Glinda understudy on the national tour of Wicked, but she is better known for her Broadway debut as ditzy sorority sister Margot in Legally Blonde. She went on to play Glinda on Broadway and take over the role of Jeanie in Hair before snapping up the role of Maureen in the first New York revival of Jonathan Larson's landmark rock musical Rent. She received her first Tony nomination for playing Lauren in Kinky Boots.
