Claim to fame

Gareth Saxe made his Broadway debut in the Roundabout Theatre Company's 2006 revival of Heartbreak House. The following year he joined the starry cast of the Tony-nominated revival of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, sharing the stage with Raul Esparza, Eve Best and Ian McShane. After catching Saxe's performance, Julie Taymor tapped the actor to join The Lion King as Simba's villainous uncle, Scar.

Here comes the costume. Hair stylist Alison Wadsworth helps Saxe step into his lionskin, while Saxe’s dressing roommate Cameron Pow (who plays Zazu) watches).

Saxe takes a final look in the mirror to make sure everything is in place.

With more than 30 pounds of gear attached to his costume, Saxe receives some help from dresser Chad Jason.

A final powdery layer of makeup ensures that Cohen's elaborate work remains in place.

A bit of villainous red is applied to keep Scar looking scary.

Saxe’s eyelids feel the power of the brush.

He just can’t wait to be king! Saxe sits patiently throughout the process. The pair entertain themselves by listening to Kate Nash and the B-52s.

Saxe sneaks a peek at himself in the mirror.

Saxe’s face becomes more complex as Cohen adds black and darker tones to give Scar his namesake marks.

Yellow is applied to his eyebrows to brighten things up.

This is just a sampling of the many brushes needed for the animalistic conversion!

The brown is evened out to make Saxe’s skin resemble the complexion of a lion.

The circle of life begins with a first layer of makeup. (The entire process takes about an hour to complete.)

Gareth Saxe reports for duty at the Minskoff Theatre, where the elaborate mechanics of Scar’s costume that occupy an entire corner of his dressing room.

Saxe takes a seat in front of his mirror and hooks up speakers to ensure he’s surrounded by pre-show music.

Stocking cap on! Saxe enters the backstage makeup room where Lion King makeup supervisor Elizabeth Cohen preps Saxe for transformation time.

Due to the costume’s staggering height, Saxe must wait until he is in the wings to put on Scar’s headpiece. A minute before showtime, the head is attached to the costume. Transformation complete, Saxe ready for audiences to hear his roar. To see him in action, get tickets to The Lion King at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre.
