Blithe Spirit

The cast of this starry revival includes Angela Lansbury, Christine Ebersole and Rupert Everett.

When writer Charles Condomine decides to hold a séance as research for a new mystery novel, he has no idea that he’ll end up being haunted by his now-deceased first wife, Elvira—a ghost that only he can see. Not surprisingly, Charles’ second wife, Ruth, isn’t amused by his claim that Elvira is in the room, and the comedy quotient rises to a fever pitch when Madame Arcati, the daffy medium who conducted the séance, tells Charles she has no idea how to send this blithe spirit back where she came from!

Should I See It?

What is Blithe Spirit Like?
Noel Coward’s 1941 comedy is a classic drawing-room farce, and it’s played that way, with sumptuous costumes and production design. It’s a feel-good evening in which audiences can sit back and relax, knowing they’re seeing truly funny play performed by actors who understand the material. The big drawing card of this revival, of course, is the delightful presence of 83-year-old Angela Lansbury as Madame Arcati.

Is Blithe Spirit Good for Kids?
The language of this comedy may be a bit old-fashioned, but if school-age kids enjoy watching grown-ups (including a ghost) make fools of themselves, there’s no reason not to take them to Blithe Spirit.
