What Is the Story of The Burnt Part Boys?
This new off-Broadway musical, set in 1962, centers on two West Virginia brothers, 18-year-old Jake and 14-year-old Pete, who have basically raised themselves in the 10 years since their father died in a mining accident. Now the mine (known locally as the “Burnt Part”) is being reopened, and Jake has been assigned to work there, much to Pete’s dismay. Along with his best friend Dusty and a feisty young girl they meet along the way, Pete sets off on a treacherous journey up the mountain, determined to take action so that the ill-fated mine will never claim another life.
What Is The Burnt Part Boys Like?
The show features a bluegrass-flavored score with lovely multipart harmonies sung by the two younger boys as well as Jake and his best friend and fellow miner Chet. The ghosts of the boys’ dead fathers make brief appearances, and young Pete shares some imaginary exchanges with Sam Houston, Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, characters from his favorite film, The Alamo. On an otherwise empty stage, rolling ladders and wood chairs stand in for a variety of scenery, including the trail to the infamous Burnt Part mine. All the young characters come together for a suspenseful climax to this satisfying show.
Is The Burnt Part Boys Good for Kids?
The Burnt Part Boys is excellent family fare for school-age kids and their parents. It presents three spunky, vividly written 14-year-old characters involved in an adventure plot that young theatergoers (especially boys) will identify with and embrace. The music is easy on the ears and 100-minute running time will please everybody in your theater party.
