Story

What Is the Story of Circle Mirror Transformation?
Set in a community center in a small Vermont town, Circle Mirror Transformation follows the progress of four students in a beginners’ acting class taught by a free-spirited woman named Marty. It’s a motley group, including a lonely divorced man, a withdrawn high school student, a former New York actress who’s just moved to town, and Marty’s husband, Peter, who seems to be headed for a midlife crisis. The play’s title comes from one of the many acting exercises the characters engage in during class, which—over time—reveals aspects of their personality and hopes for the future.

Should I See It?

What Is Circle Mirror Transformation Like?
This quirky one-act comedy draws you in from the first scene, which finds the cast members lying on the floor of a rec room set, counting to 10 in a seemingly random way (one of the many amusing acting exercises that become a crucial part of the play). In successive scenes charting the progress of the class, the characters reveal their quirks and faults, and yet the script manages to make all of them likeable, understandable and even touching. Anyone who has ever attended an acting class (or thought about it) will appreciate the humor in Circle Mirror Transformation, a surprise hit that has been extended four times at Playwrights Horizons. In short, it’s a treat!

Is Circle Mirror Transformation Good for Kids?
There’s talk of infidelity and the onset of several brief affairs, so the play is not kid fare. But teens who dream of an acting career will find Circle Mirror Transformation riveting. After all, one character is a student just like them—who just happens to be the play’s biggest truth teller, to excellent comic effect.
